How to Play

Ladies and gentleman, it’s DABWAHA  TIME.

For newbies and for those who entered in previous years but were not sure what the heck was going on, here’s some instructions on how to participated in the DABWAHA Tournament.

We’ll put out a slate of 64 picks.  8 categories and 8 books in each category.  In each category, the books are seeded 1-8.  The books then face off against one another with book 8 going up against book 1, book 7 going up against book 2, book 6 going up against book 3.  And so on and so forth.

The books compete against each other through the use of a poll and readers pick which book is going to win.

Before the books start competing against each other (I know, it sounds weird), readers fill out a bracket, picking who is going to win.   Here is the tournament entry link. Bookmark it or look for this link on the site:

How do I enter my picks?

To enter your picks, click ENTER YOUR PICKS in the top menu.

Enter Your Picks

Then, at the top right, select “NEW” and enter your player nickname.  You will then be asked to enter your first and last name.  Only the player nickname will be public.

Player Nickname DABWAHA

Enter your email address in the box provided.

Make your picks by selecting the title you think will win each competition in the dropdown box:

drop down box

Enter the tiebreaker which is the total number of reader nominations sent in for the final slot. Put this in the comment box:

Comment box

This is the important part: when you click “SUBMIT PICKS” in the bottom left, your entry will not appear right away.

Let me say that again: Your entry will not appear right away.

But whyyyyyy am I not seeing my entry right away?

Because each entry is stored off line and must be compiled and uploaded into the server in batches. This is done manually. By Jane. So she’ll collect the entries in groups through the selection period and upload them in groups.

What is this points thing?

The contest is modeled after the original March Madness which is the college basketball tournament where 65 teams go at each other until there is one winner. Think Hoosiers.   The software we use is for college basketball (and other sports events) and those are points driven.

The “points” for the dabwaha are represented by poll numbers.  I.e., how many votes the book gets in the polls we run.  When entering a tiebreaker, you need to enter the total number of reader nominations sent in for the final slot. Put this in the comment box.  The tiebreaker is just in case there is a tie (or more) for winning bracket entries.

  1. Help! I registered, made my picks, got my tourney brackets sent to me but I CANNOT LOG IT!! I am using the email addy my tourney picks came to and every variation of my password and STILL NO LUCK. Can someone help this poor dummy?

  2. Jane, I got the ‘too late’ message too. Is my bracket stored somewhere or should I give it another go?

  3. @Julie – could you give it another go. I deployed a new pick sheet with a new deadline of Wednesday. I had mistaken which day (13 v. 14) was Wednesday.

  4. Hello, I think I didn’t understand the part about the tiebracker:
“Enter the tiebreaker which is the total number of reader nominations sent in for the final slot. Put this in the comment box:”
I should enter the numbers of votes I think the finalist book will receive?
And I have to put it both in the Tie Break box (Round 6 column) and in the comment box?

Sorrry for the trouble, and thank you!

  5. ugh… so many computer troubles! I can’t tell if my picks were selected; is there a way to tell? I thought it went through but then when I came back it told me I needed to make more picks?

  6. Jane, just a quick question. (btw, no difficulties signing up this year :)) I’m looking at my picks and some show up red and others blue and others black. Would you clarify them just for my piece of mind. Thanks.

  7. I click New and nothing happens, can’t enter my own nickname just the list of others comes up

  8. Help! Trying to submit picks & keeping getting error message that I must enter a selection for every game but I HAVE! What do I do?

  9. @Carribean Accent – you are supposed to guess. That’s why it’s the tie breaker. Person who guesses the closest wins (if there is a tie and there never has been).

  10. @Shelly – I hate to say this, but you must be missing one. A lot of people miss the very last match because the two books are stacked on top of each other. You need to pick one last time to get a champion.

  11. Oh wait I’m on the scoreboard but I didn’t receive an email with my picks or anything am I suppose

  12. I feel stupid. I went through all the comments but still don’t get it – what am I supposed to put for the tiebreaker? Do I just make up a random number and put it in there? Confused!

  13. It’s perfect time to make some plans for the future and it is time to be happy. I have read this post and if I could I wish to suggest you some interesting things or advice. Maybe you could write next articles referring to this article. I desire to read more things about it!

  14. Inside the city of West Caanan, starting QB was a place of reputation. But in place of allowing Mox delight in himself, even for any second, she began telling him he had changed. I figured that was planning to occur, but do not you assume a girlfriend would make it possible for her boyfriend to enjoy his second within the highlight for just a couple of minutes ahead of telling him he is not the man she fell in appreciate with? Jon Voight’s character was one more 1.

  15. For anyone else who has the same problem, usually it is the result of failing to pick a champion in the sixth round. When you have the final two teams stacked on top of each other select one that you think will win the championship. Enter the number of nominations you think we have received and press submit.

  16. I. Am. So. Lame. I don’t know where to guide people to vote. I swear… I am in so over my head. Lord. Do you have a link where people – who have set up brackets, I think – can then vote on the 20th? And? I can never make fun of my Mom again for anything computer related.

  17. @Liza – the polls will go up in a blog post on the front page of Voting starts at midnight. 1 vote per IP address. You can vote multiple times so long as you have access to more than one IP address. I.e., your cell phone will have a different one than your computer.

Voting runs in 12 hour blocks so that people around the world (like New Zealand and Australia) have a chance to vote in every round.

  18. Jane – Thank you so much. I have been leading people so astray. I think they’re now voting on the Goodreads page? I mean… *walks out into traffic*

  19. I have to thank you for the efforts you have put in penning this website.
I really hope to see the same high-grade content by you
later on as well. In fact, your creative writing abilities has inspired me to get my own,
    personal website now 😉

  22. How long does it take before we see ourselves added? I know it’s not right away, but I did my bracket Sunday (17th) and I don’t see myself in the player standings/lists. SDL88 was my player name and my bracket was successfully emailed to me.

  23. Hi, when I went to look at the standings, the bracket under my name doesn’t match my original picks that were emailed to me. What happened?

  25. Hi can someone explain the “total number of reader nominations sent in for the final slot” to me? I would not know how many other readers nominated the books I did, so how would I know what to put in? Thanks!

for race day with a progressive training program – especially important if
you’re new to racing – that improves your finish time and reduces your
